Back when I was a kid, I'd get the monthly Nintendo Power magazine and check out the top games of the month to see what was popular (A Link to the Past was my default vote). I wanted to build something in Hardcover that would show that, but allow for understanding over time. A bump chart was the perfect data visualization for it. The Y-axis indicates the rank during any month, while the X-axis is time.
